My eyes snapped open. Despite being deep asleep, something triggered my protective instinct. After a quick review of my situation, I realized I was curled around Lo, with an arm protectively wrapped around her. I remembered I'd fallen asleep in my bed after a heated discussion with Lo. She'd refused to take the bed without me. Instead, she'd stolen one of my T-Shirts and curled up on the couch. Short of carrying into my room, tossing her on the bed, and locking the door, I couldn't have bribed her to sleep in there.

So I'd laid in bed, questioning my life choices until I'd fallen asleep. I didn't remember her joining me. After a quick analysis of her deep breathing, there was no way she'd woken me up. She'd probably been here for hours.

Slipping from the bed, I moved silently. If there was an intruder, I didn't want them to know I was awake. Nor did I want to startle Lo. A quick check through my house revealed all the doors and windows remained locked. It wasn't until I checked the cameras through an app on my phone that I tensed. A shadowy figure dressed in black left a note tucked into my front door. Flipping through the other video feeds, I didn't see a sign of the trespasser. They were probably gone even though it had just happened.

Only opening the door a crack, I grabbed the note. After I locked the door, I took the note into the kitchen and turned on a small light. Even though the bedroom door hung open, the light wasn't in view of the bedroom. The trespasser folded the note into fourths and not evenly. I read the words scrawled in sloppy handwriting.

This is your only warning. Turn away the human you protect and we won't kill her. Attempt to mate with her, and we'll kill you both. The gods will punish us for the insults we throw in their faces when we choose humans over shifters, unless we make changes.

The handwriting nagged at me, but I couldn't figure out why. I wanted to shred the note to pieces for containing a threat on my mate's life. Ice shot down my spine. She wasn't my mate… well, she was, but I would find a way to release her from the bond. Lo didn't deserve a mate like me. No, she deserved a male who didn't come from a dysfunctional family with so much baggage. It was impossible to move on.

With soft steps, I retrieved my phone from the bedside and dialed Felix's number. When he didn't answer, I called him again. After the fourth try, Felix's groggy voice answered. "What the hell is your problem?"

"Not so much fun when someone calls you nonstop, now is it?" I smiled darkly to myself, then it disappeared as I relayed the recent threat. "Lo's not safe here. I just had someone dressed in black leave a threat on my doorstep."

"Fuck." I heard a commotion, and Felix grumbled. Then Luna called out in the background.
